For a pretty good news story on the evolution of the Internet click here. A lot of folks have no idea that the Internet has been around a whole lot longer than just a few years.

  XP Service Pack 2 Info:

The "official" release date for the service pack is August 24th, although many a "techie" has already downloaded and installed it. Funny thing is, although not officially released to the public - there has already been a patch released for the service pack.
Where does it all end?

  Risky business:

Click here to read a news story about what folks do that put themselves at risk while surfing the Internet. Although I believe people are getting more savvy when it comes to hoaxes and scams, there are still a lot of individuals who access the World Wide Web that need to wake-up and smell the coffee. Some of the stories that I read about "victims" and their plights are just plain outrageous. Sorta' like standing on the batter's mound, without a bat, and being surprised that there is a baseball flying at you at 60 mph.

We've got to stay on top of things....

In the old days (like two or three years ago), someone could connect a computer to the Internet, and although that computer was not running the latest updates and had no virus protection installed, it could maybe survive for a few hours before being attacked. Last year, the average time before attack was down to 40 minutes. Now, the time is reported to be 15-20 minutes. That is pretty scary folks. All the more reason to make sure that you either have "Windows Update" run automatically or you manually run it very, very often. There is also absolultey no excuse for not running a good anti-virus program on your computer.

Be alert, be aware, be careful - but most of all have fun.

  An apology....

You'll notice that I've not made a post to this Blog for a few days now. I do have a good excuse though. In the past week I've relocated about 1200 miles east of my former location. I've moved from Clovis, New Mexico to Niceville, Florida - which is located in the panhandle of Florida (we like to call it the "Emerald Coast").

Starting this week, I'll get back on the ball and begin posting again.

Thanks for your patience,
Tom

  Yahoo goes local:

Although the folks at Yahoo attempted in the past, to provide local information - even for small towns such as Clovis, New Mexico - they never did a very good job. That is all about to change from what I have seen. Take a peak at local.yahoo.com and then give it a little test for yourself. I don't think Yahoo does too bad of a job - especially for a small community in eastern New Mexico.

  New form of MSN Messenger:

How many times have you found yourself at a public Internet terminal but unable to access MSN Messenger? Either the program was never installed and/or the terminal maintainer didn't want the program installed and therefore blocked it. Well, relief is at hand. Just jump over to webmessenger.msn.com and you can test out a Web based version of the Messenger program. That's right folks, no software to download and install. Just go to the site address and log-in with your regular MSN Messenger username and password - it's that easy.

New Mexican's to get rich off of Microsoft:

Yeah right. Although a court has determined that Microsoft owes the residents of New Mexico over 30 million dollars - do you think we will every really see it? The money is supposed to go to anyone who purchased Microsoft operating systems or applications between 1995 and 2002.

One advantage for New Mexicans - there is a lot fewer folks in the state than there are in most of the other states - means more money back to fewer folks right? I'm just wondering how in the world do we prove what we have purchased over all those years - not gonna' be easy. You can read one of the breaking news stories by clicking here.

The information that I post in this Blog supplements my newspaper column and eZine. You can visit the "Tracker Tom's Internet Safari" Web site @ www.trackertom.com/ - stop on in for a spell.
